In this post, we will discuss top largest dams of Pakistan.

Pakistan is a South Asian country. Multiple glaciers are there in Himalaya and Karakoram mountain ranges. These glaciers are source of water for drinking, agricukture and power generation. To properly manage this water, many small and large dams are built on rivers. These dams store and control waterflow in different weathers and situations. Here we will disucss top 5 most important dams of Pakistan.



(1) Tarbela Dam:

Location: Haripur
Height: 143.26m
Storage: 11.62 MAF (Million Acre Feet)
Completion: 1976
Tarbela dam is the largest dam of Pakistan and also the largest earthen dam in the World. This dam is constructed on Indus River in Haripur District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.This dam was the part of Indus water treaty according to which, multiple dams were constructed in Pakistan to overcome the water shortage in Pakistan. This dam is an important source of fresh water which is used for drinking, irrigation and power generation through turbines.

(2) Mangla Dam:

Location: Mirpur
Height: 147m
Storage: 7.4 MAF
Completion: 1965
Mangla dam is the 2nd largest dam of Pakistan.It is constructed on Jehlum River in the Mirpur district of Azad Kashmir. This dam was also constructed with the cooperation of World Bank under Indus Water Treaty. This dam was completed in the rule of Ayub Khan. This dam is very important for Agriculture in Punjab Province.It is an embankment dam.

(3) Warsak Dam:

Location: Peshawar District
Depth:  76.2m
Storage: 25300 MAF
Completion: 1960
Warsak dam is the smallest dam of Pakistan. It is situated in Peshawar District. This dam is very important as water supply for Peshawar city is provided through this dam. This dam is also important as it contributes some useful part in Electricity Production. This dam is main source of irrigation for Nowshehra, Mardan, Bannu etc districts. It is a gravity dam. This dam is constructed on Kabul River. It also saves Peshawar and other major cities of KPK by controlling flow of water.

(4) Gomal Zam Dam:

Location: South Waziristan
Height: 133m
Storage: 890000 Acre Feet
Completion: 2011
Gomal Zam dam is situated in South Waziristan region of ex-FATA. This dam is an important source of water for North and South Waziristan agencies like Bajaur, Karam, Mohmand etc. Waziristan area mostly consists of dry mountains. Annual rainfall in these areas is very low. So, this dam is the main source of water to meet all the needs of these areas. This is also a gravity dam.

(5): Hub Dam:

Location: Sindh-Balochistan Border
Height: 103.6m
Storage: 857000 Acre Feet
Completion: 1981
Hub Dam is constructed on Hub River. It is constructed on the border of Sindh and Balochistsan Province. This dam is situated at 56km distance from Karachi. This dam is a main source of supply for Karachi city. This dam was constructed in the rule of Zia-ul-haq. It is a Earth fill dam.It is the 5th largest dam in Pakistan.

(6) Diamer Bhasha Dam: 

Location: Kohistan & Diamer Districts
Height: 272m
Storage: 8100000 Acre Feet
Completion: 2028 (Expected)
This dam is being constructed on Indus River. This dam is situated on the border of KPK and Gilgit Baltistan.Pakistan is facing water scarcity. This dam will be very useful for water storage and electricity generation. It is a gravity dam.

(7) Mohmand Dam:

Location: Mohmand District
Height: 213m
Storage:1200000 Acre Feet
Completion: 2024 (Expected)
Mohmand dam is an under construction dam.This dam is being constructed on Swat River.It is a concrete-faced rock filled dam.
